Review: Shawn Hill on "Contemplating the Horizontal," at Arden from Berkshire Fine Arts, 12.27.08
"Contemplating the Horizontal" features stripes that manage to retain strict geometry while never forgetting the gestural touch of the artist's hand, especially in a subtractive sub-series where wax is scraped away in horizontal bands to reveal underlying layers of color and texture. While most of her panels are square, the show doesn't lack for variety or vibrant color." Above: "Vicolo 40," 2008, 12 x 12 inches, encaustic on panel
Installation view: Adler & Co., San Francisco, 2008
The gallery recently moved from Post Street to 77 Geary. That's my grid of 16 Silk Road paintings in the new space
Installation view: OK Harris Gallery, New York City, 2007
Long wall with a row of paintings from my solo show, "Silk Road." Because of the luminous nature of the paint and the surface grid suggestive of woven fabric, the series found its own name. I’ve limned each painting to charge the intensity of its color field and, I hope, to spark the eye so that it travels from painting to painting on a small visual journey of its own.
